Normandy Sherwood is a writer, a director, and a scenographer/costumer who has been building worlds in NYC for two decades.
Recent work includes THE MUSHROOM created with Nikki Calonge, presented in the 2026 Exponential Festival and coming to Governor’s Island for Under the Radar 2027, co-presented by LMCC and New Georges; her 2023 curtain spectacular PSYCHIC SELF DEFENSE (for which she received a 2024 OBIE Award) and her 2020 socially distanced bestiary, Beast Visit (both created/presented as a part of HERE Arts Center’s HARP residency).
Other recent collaborations include her work as Scenographer/Co-creator of Theater in Quarantine’s Phantom of the Opera (2025) and Nosferatu, a 3-D Symphony of Horror (2023) presented by NYU Skirball; her scenic, prop, costume design for Two Sisters Find a Box of Lesbian Erotica in the Woods by Bailey Williams and Emma Horwitz (2024), produced by Rattlestick/New Georges; and her costume design for Lisa Fagan and Lena Englestein’s Friday Night Rat Catchers (2025/2026) at New York Live Arts.
She led the theater companies The Drunkard's Wife (co-Artistic director, 2009-2025) and The National Theater of the United States of America aka NTUSA (co-artistic director, 2001-2017). With the Drunkard’s Wife, she created and produced 7 shows at places like The New Ohio Theatre, Rubulad, and The Brick. With the NTUSA she toured the U.S., won an OBIE award, published a book called A New Practical Guide to Rhetorical Gesture and Action (53rd State Press) and created shows that were presented at UTR/ The Public Theater, The Kitchen, PS122 (and more).
She has developed her work through residencies at MacDowell, Yaddo, Millay Arts, Mercury Store, LMCC, the New Georges Audrey Residency and others. Her costume/ set design work includes designs for productions by Faye Driscoll, Tina Satter/ Half Straddle, Young Jean Lee, Rachel Chavkin/Anne Washburn, Target Margin Theater and Kristin Marting. She is a Clinical Professor in Expository Writing at NYU and has an MFA in playwriting from Brooklyn College.
